Our recitation of the facts is limited to those events deemed relevant to the issues before us on appeal. Details regarding the later procedural history of this appeal are recounted in Stanford v. Paris, 364 N.C. 306, 308-11, - S.E.2d -, - (2011). This action concerns the distribution of property from the estate of Charles Whitson Stanford, Jr. (“testator”), who died 19 May 1990, leaving a signed, holographic will dated 24 October 1970.
