The defendant, Jason Carroll, was convicted after two jury trials in Superior Court {Murphy, J.) of second degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. He appeals, arguing that his confession was involuntary and that the police violated his right to remain silent. We affirm.

The pertinent facts follow. The strangled and stabbed body of Sharon Johnson, then in an advanced stage of pregnancy, was found at a Bedford construction site on the morning of July 29, 1988, and the State Medical Examiner determined that she had been killed the night before.
