Following a jury trial in January 1991 defendant, John Markiewicz, was found guilty of first degree murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1). Defendant was found to be eligible for the death penalty (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1(b)(8)), but was sentenced to a term of natural-life imprisonment without parole.
