James Mein filed a complaint in the circuit court of Cook County against his former employer, the Masonite Corporation, alleging that he was wrongfully discharged by Masonite in violation of the public policy of Illinois which prohibits age discrimination in the workplace. The trial court granted the defendant’s motion to dismiss the complaint for failure to state a cause of action. The appellate court affirmed, holding that the Illinois Human Rights Act (Ill. Rev.
