This case involves an employee benefit plan governed by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA), 29 U.S.C. §§ 1001-1461 (1988), and administered by the employer, Georgia-Pacific Cor*608poration. Georgia-Pacific employees and plan participants Richard F. Kennedy and his daughter, Toni K. Mahoney, were seriously injured when Kennedy’s car collided with another car. As a result of injuries received in the accident, Kennedy eventually incurred nearly $94,000 in medical bills and Mahoney incurred nearly $100,000 in medical bills. The collision was the fault of…
