The decedent was a native of Alsace, now a province of Prussia, and came to this country and settled in Eew York in the year 1829. He was a butcher by trade, and died at the age of sixty-six years, having amassed a large fortune, estimated at from $600,000 to $800,000, invested mostly in real estate in the city of New York. He was illiterate, and could neither read nor write, except that he could write his name and read figures. He was married in early life, and of that marriage had three sons and one daughter.
