This action is brought to recover damages for the publication of the following article, which is claimed to be libelous:

“Eugene McGuire, who, but a few months ago, was telling the people of this county how to live, and who was officious in the conventions of the Populists as a leader, has come to grief at his home near Bath. The Lansing Journal has the following in his case: ‘Some months ago, McGuire entered into an agreement to work a farm near Bath village for a certain Lansing gentleman.
