The defendant corporation, a fraternal beneficiary association, issued three benefit certificates to Sydney R. Knappen, each for the sum of $1,500, and in each of which plaintiff, his wife, was named as beneficiary. He and his wife became estranged and separated, and before his death he designated his sister, defendant Mabel C. Knappen, as beneficiary in the certificates. Whether the change of beneficiary became effective under the laws of the association is the question in controversy.
