I. BACKGROUND

The ready-to-cook chicken that you buy at your local grocery store is called a *974broiler chicken. Demand for broiler chicken has remained relatively constant, rising slightly but steadily since the 1950s. Furthermore, demand for broiler chicken has been inelastic; that is, insensitive to changes in price. The price for chicken may rise or drop, but the number of consumers who buy chicken remains about the same.
