Prank James, eighty-four years old, lived alone in a house on an acreage two miles northeast of Maquoketa. About 9 p. m. on May 2, 1942, after he had retired, James heard a rap at his door, which he proceeded to answer. After he reached up to unhook the screen door, someone stuck a gun into the screen. James tried to grab the gun but it discharged into his hand. He then went out onto the porch in pursuit of his assailant, who apparently became frightened.
