The events which led to the indictment and conviction of the defendant in this case grew out of the financial embarrassments of the Carnegie Trust Company in the city of New York in the spring of 1910. That institution was then practically under the control of the defendant and his allies in business operations. Some of them were also more or less interested in the affairs of three other banking corporations in New York: The Van Norden Trust Company, the Nineteenth Ward Bank and the Twelfth Ward Bank.
