Karen King, the plaintiff-appellant, brought suit in Maryland state court against Marriott International, Inc., her former employer, and Karl I. Fredericks, her immediate supervisor, for wrongful discharge under Maryland state law, asserting in particular that she was discharged for complaining about and for refusing to violate the Employment Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, 29 U.S.C. § 1001 et seq.
