Defendant, Gregario Garcia, was charged by indictment with the offense of aggravated criminal sexual assault (Ill. Rev Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 12 — 14(a)(2) (now 720 ILCS 5/12 — 14(a)(2) (West 1992))) based on allegations that, while baby-sitting four-year-old M.D., he placed his finger or some other object in M.D.’s vagina, causing bodily injury. Following a jury trial in the circuit court of Winnebago County, defendant was found guilty of the offense and was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment.
