This was an action in tort, brought by H. C. Judd and Root, of Hartford, Conn., plaintiffs below and plaintiffs in error here, against the New York & Texas Steamship Company, popularly known as the “Mallory Line,” the defendant in error, to recover the sum of $26,538.88, the value of 869 bales of wool, destroyed by fire on July 2, 1896, while in the custody of the defendant, at Galveston, Tex. This wool came into the possession of the defendant by a shipment from the interior of Texas, on the 27th of June, 1896, upon two bills of lading of the San Antonio & Aransas Pass…
