I think the number one reason so many people don't like their service technicians is because they don't communicate well. And the homeowner's like, I don't want that guy back because he gave me weird looks, stared at his feet while he handed me a $10,000 estimate. Like, it just feels weird. Welcome

to the Sales Made Simple podcast. This podcast is dedicated to helping overwhelmed outdoor living professionals, landscapers, and hardscapers just like you increase your closing rate to over 75% without doubling your workload so you can build a seven-figure business that doesn't need you. I'm your host, Joshua Gillow. Let's dig in. Hey everybody, welcome back to the Sales Made Simple podcast. This is your host, Joshua Gilliland. This week, I have Ryan England on. He's from Core Matters and they specialize in helping businesses build teams, build teams that'll last to, or give you a lasting impact that'll really be able to serve your customers and to be able to take your company from where you are to where you want to go. So Ryan, welcome to the show. Joshua, thanks for having me. Absolutely. So tell us a little bit about Core Matters. I was looking online and looking at what you're doing and it's, yeah, man, it looks like you're all over the place doing great things, helping teams grow, integrating AI, all that kind of stuff. So what are you guys doing over there that's making the biggest move right now? Yeah, we're intentionally all over the place. There's just

so many opportunities for contractors. I started my marketing company 15 years ago and I thought, hey, if I could just help these guys with more leads, more cash, more of that coming in. The problem wasn't leads. The problem was they didn't have people they could trust to do the work. So I pivoted and I said, hey, I believe that I can help them with recruiting. I can help them build great teams, frontline teams in particular, because recruiting is nothing more than a marketing activity. And when you really think about that, when you are recruiting, you are marketing for the best talent that's out there. So I built a system called the CoreFit Hiring System, and it was all about how do we hire and onboard and keep the best people. And over the years, we've evolved that in the CoreFit Blueprint, which is a set of systems, processes, and tools that equips management and leadership teams and even the owner to get the business running the way they've always wanted it. And it's something that we come alongside. We partner. We do a lot of the work for them. One of the things that we do a ton of is write job descriptions. Anybody that likes writing job descriptions. That's what we do a lot of.

And but it's great because when people get the job description and it has the level of clarity that I believe they need, we've we've had people be in tears because they're like, wow, this is what you've expected.

What if the biggest reason you're losing good employees has nothing to do with pay, and everything to do with how you communicate?

In this episode, Joshua Gillow sits down with Ryan Englin of Core Matters to talk about how AI is reshaping leadership, hiring, and communication in the trades. Ryan shares why the real problem behind most staffing struggles isn't a lack of leads or a labor shortage, but a retention problem rooted in poor communication. They dig into how AI can help owners and frontline managers slow down emotionally charged moments, have tougher conversations with more compassion, and finally solve the dreaded performance review.

By the end of this episode, you'll learn:

  • Why AI can't read your tone or body language, and how that "blind spot" can actually make it a powerful tool for responding instead of reacting when you're frustrated with a teammate.
  • A simple, non-confrontational way to open up a tough conversation with an underperforming employee, without triggering defensiveness or a fight-or-flight response.
  • How AI is starting to move beyond the office and into the field, giving technicians and crews real-time answers, SOPs, and the right words to say on the job site.
