283 turns · 21 minSo much in this industry, we, we kind of put blinders on for.
Mm.
We're so stressed about trying to keep our businesses running, we're so stressed about trying to make sure our customers are happy, that oftentimes we forget about the teams that are doing the work. Welcome to the Sales Made Simple podcast. This podcast is dedicated to helping overwhelmed outdoor living professionals, landscapers, and hardscapers just like you increase your closing rate to over 75% without doubling your workload so you can build a seven-figure business that doesn't need you. I'm your host, Joshua Gillow. Let's dig in. [upbeat music] Hey, everybody. Welcome back to the Sales Made Simple podcast. I have Ryan England back on here, and, uh, if you missed it last week, we went deep into integrating AI into your, uh, service teams and getting them out. Like, how do we, how do we take that technology and help them become more capable?
Mm.
Help them become better at what they're doing, and really give them the, the tools they need to succeed. So if you didn't listen or you haven't heard last week's episode, go back and take a listen. But this week, as promised at the end of last week's, we're gonna go into, all right, so as leaders, how do we... How do we show our teammates that we care, right?
Yeah.
Especially as guys. I know for me this is something I struggled with a lot in the beginning. When I first started out, I thought that I had to be strong, I didn't have to show empathy, I didn't wanna show any kind of, like, that I cared, because if I showed too much, they might take too much from me, or I just didn't know how to manage those emotions or those things.
Mm-hmm.
So today, Ryan and I are gonna unpack that for you, how, as leaders, you can get more connected and demonstrate-
Mm
... not just tell, but demonstrate that you truly care to your teams, because like I mentioned at the end of the last episode, teammates quit leadership, right? They, or they, they, they, that's how they do. They're gonna quit the leader, right? Not necessarily the job, it's the leader. They don't like the way that it's being run inside of the business. They don't like the way they're being treated, or they feel like they're just not seen.
Mm.
Or all their work, all that hard work that they're putting in just doesn't seem to matter, because you know what? Yeah, the pro- project goes through, the money's collected, I get my paycheck. I'm right back out again, and I feel like they're just a rented mule and like the, the, the owner or the leadership team just doesn't care. So Ryan, I'd love for you to start helping us understand in, in the way you manage and consult with, uh, different, uh, service providers how you've helped train that.
Yeah.
So that you can help leaders become better, more, uh, connected and caring individuals.
Th- this is, this is one of those topics that there's probably people right now that are going, "You got six more seconds and I'm hanging this up-
[laughs]
... podcast episode up, 'cause I don't wanna hear this." Here's the thing. If you're feeling that right now, you probably need to hear this.
Oh, yeah.
Okay. You're the one that needs to hear this, so, so keep it going. Here's the

What if the reason your best guys are quietly checking out has nothing to do with pay, and everything to do with the fact that they don't know you care?
In this episode, Joshua Gillow continues his conversation with Ryan Englin of Core Matters, picking up where they left off on using AI to build stronger teams. This time, they tackle something much harder to systemize: how leaders in the trades can actually show their teams they care, without it feeling forced, weak, or out of character. Ryan and Joshua get personal about the culture that teaches men to shove down emotion, the sobering mental health realities in construction, and the simple, low-pressure habits that build real trust on a crew.
By the end of this episode, you'll learn:
- Why "no news is good news" is one of the most damaging beliefs a leader can carry, and what it silently tells your team.
- A simple onboarding tool called the "fuzzy file" that helps you learn what actually matters to your people, so a birthday card or a favorite snack can speak louder than any speech.
- Why asking "how did you sleep last night" in a morning huddle might be one of the most powerful leadership questions you can ask, and how sending someone home for a couple of days can save you from a much bigger cost down the road.
