a month one person agency. Today's guest has a business that sounds pretty futuristic, but it's one I think you could probably replicate yourself. Not right out of the gate, but build it brick by brick. He manages a team of 500 employees. AI agents that do work for his clients on an ongoing basis. It's one part digital agency. It's one part consultancy with more than a little micro SaaS or software as a service sprinkled on top. From lemonbrand.io, Simon Bergeron. Welcome to the Side Hustle Show.

Thank you very much for having me, Nick. It's a pleasure to be here.

I'm excited for this one. Stick around. We're talking crafting your offer and closing the sale. We're talking pricing for profitability, what's working in terms of marketing, and importantly, how to deliver the goods. So Simon, it feels like... Every company at this point, large or small, has a person whose job it is to, quote unquote, figure out AI. But often as business owners, and I found myself in this position, we're too busy chopping down trees to sharpen the saw. So you come in and you say, well, hey, let me audit your processes. We've got to start by figuring out what it is that you do. And let me see if I can build you some robots. Is that kind of like the opening pitch here?

SB
Simon Bergeron2:31

That's about it. My mantra when I come in is measure first, then you automate something. There's a lot of people who are going about it and they're trying to automate everything from the

get-go.

SB
Simon Bergeron2:43

It's a great way to not

end up automating anything that's actually worth automating.

SB
Simon Bergeron2:49

And anyone who has any form of good intuition on this or any dev background, they can come in, they can work with the models, they can work with AI and generate code that does automation, right? But how do you know that's the right thing to automate?

NL
Nick Loper3:04

And this is beyond just building Zapier Zaps or Make triggers. This is a little bit beyond. I mean, that stuff absolutely could help, and I've built several of those over the last 12 months. But it's kind of going a little bit beyond that, yeah?

2Episode notes

Can one person run an AI consultancy without hiring a team of developers?

Simon Bergeron runs Lemonbrand.io, a one-person business that’s part digital agency, part consultancy, with some micro SaaS on top.

He manages a team of about 500 AI agents doing ongoing work for clients.

Simon tried to pick a niche, but referrals kept pulling him into golf clubs, dentist offices, manufacturers, and accounting firms. The common thread was team size.

Solo operators rarely need outside help, and big companies get bogged down in politics. Teams of 5 to 200 people turned out to be the sweet spot.

His mantra is “measure first, then automate.”

Tune in to Episode 765 of the Side Hustle Show to learn:

  • how to land your first AI automation client without a tech background
  • why an "inbox audit" is the most valuable discovery tool for finding automation opportunities
  • how to structure pricing so clients stay without feeling trapped
