WALKER, Judge.

Defendant was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and sentenced to a minimum term of 23 months and a maximum term of 37 months in prison.

The State’s evidence tended to show the following: During the early morning hours of 22 February 1997, shortly after midnight, the defendant met Peter Thomas on Orion Street in Kinston, North Carolina. Defendant and Thomas discussed a $30 debt which Thomas owed defendant for “coke” he had purchased from defendant.
