On December 15, 1958, the plaintiff, Charles Williams, was employed by J. P. Florio & Company as a stevedore as *137signed to the loading of the S.S. ARNEDYK as it was moored at the Third Street Wharf on the Mississippi River in New Orleans, Louisiana. While performing his duties in the hold of the vessel, plaintiff was injured by a falling bale or roll of pulp paper that struck him on his right leg in the area of the knee.
