In the early morning hours of July 26, 1998, the plaintiff's decedent, Michael Shafer, was a passenger in a motor vehicle owned by Peter Panaroni and operated as a family vehicle with his permission by his son, Jason Panaroni (Panaroni), traveling on a public street in the town of Branford.1 Shafer was actually riding on the car's roof when Panaroni lost control of the vehicle, resulting in its rollover.
