Shortly after midnight on June 23, 2004, Louis *859Mathews and Scott Turner left a bar in Mashpee and began walking the short distance to a house where Turner had been staying. Later that morning, Turner’s badly battered body was discovered on the lawn of a house located in the same neighborhood. Mathews was charged with Turner’s murder and, following a five-day jury trial, was convicted of murder in the first degree by reason of extreme atrocity or cruelty. He now appeals that conviction, as well as the denial of his motion for a new trial.
