EVERETT, Chief Judge:
The appellant was tried by general court-martial, consisting of military judge alone, *37on charges alleging three absences without leave and maiming.1 Notwithstanding his pleas of not guilty, he was convicted of all three unauthorized absences2 and of aggravated assault as a lesser included offense of the charged maiming.3 Thereupon, he was sentenced to a bad-conduct discharge, confinement at hard labor for 18 months, forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and reduction to the lowest enlisted grade.
