After a competency hearing, defendant, Larry Shadow-ens, pleaded guilty in the circuit court of Williamson County to a charge of burglary and was sentenced to the penitentiary for a term of not less than two nor more than four years. On August 2, 1968, defendant filed a petition, later amended by a second petition, seeking relief under the Post-Conviction Hearing Act (Ill. Rev.
