Defendant was charged by information with the crime of murder, and with four prior convictions of felony, for each of which, it was alleged, he “served a term . . . in a penal institution. ’ ’ Upon arraignment, defendant pleaded guilty and admitted the four prior convictions. At the request of defendant’s counsel, the matter was referred to the probation officer for a report and recommendation as to punishment.
