The plaintiff, Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), brought this action in the Superior *37Court in Suffolk County against the defendant, Local 589 Amalgamated Transit Union-(union). The MBTA sought to vacate an arbitrator’s award under G. L. c. 150C, § 11 (3) (1988 ed.), asserting that the arbitrator exceeded his power in granting the award. The union counterclaimed seeking to enforce the arbitrator’s award.
