1. Under Sections 852 and 859, B. & C. Comp., it is proper for the purpose of impeachment to show by the examination of a witness that he has been convicted of a crime, and he is required to answer as to the fact of such conviction. State v. Bacon, 13 Or. 143 (9 Pac. 393: 57 Am. Rep. 8). A defendant in a criminal case may, at his option, testify as a witness.in his own behalf (Section 1400, B. & C.
