Tasanilla Hopson deserted his wife, Delores, shortly after their marriage in 1948.1 Their child was born the following year. Because she refused to divorce him, he instituted divorce proceedings against her in Florida in 1950, shortly after his discharge from the military service and while she was living in a Maryland suburb of Washington, D. C. Delores was neither personally served with process, nor did she appear or otherwise participate in the proceedings.
