Scott, Justice.

This is an appeal from an order of the Itasca County District Court denying appellant’s petition for postconviction relief. On June 7, 1974, appellant was convicted by a jury of the crime of simple robbery. He was sentenced on July 1,1974, to an indeterminate term at the State Prison. On January 7, 1975, after the time for taking a direct appeal had expired, 1 he petitioned for postconviction relief. Although the postconviction court concluded that appellant had been denied a fair trial, the petition was denied due to appellant’s failure to seek direct review of the conviction.…
