This appeal arises out of the highly publicized confrontation between a group of white teen-agers and three black men during the early morning hours of December 20, 1986, in Howard Beach, Queens County, which resulted in the death of one of the black men, Michael Griffith and the severe beating of his companion, Cedric Sandiford.
