WILKINSON, Chief Judge:
A South Carolina jury convicted Paul Maz-zell in 1983 of criminal conspiracy, conspiracy to kidnap, murder, and kidnapping. He was sentenced to life in prison. After his conviction was affirmed on direct appeal and his request for state post-conviction relief was denied, Mazzell petitioned for a writ of habe-as corpus.
