Defendant, Donald Dillon, Jr., was charged with the unlawful possession of less than 30 grams of a controlled substance containing cocaine (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1981, ch. 561/2, par. 1402(b)). The circuit court of Cook County granted his motion to suppress the cocaine evidence, and the State appealed the suppression order pursuant to our Rule 604(a)(1) (87 Ill. 2d R. 604(a)(1)). The appellate court affirmed (116 Ill. App. 3d 1171) in a Rule 23 order (87 Ill. 2d R. 23), and we allowed the State’s petition for leave to appeal (87 Ill. 2d R. 315).
