DROWOTA, Justice.

The Sisters of Saint Francis Health Services Inc. (St. Joseph Hospital), filed an application for permission to appeal from the Court of Appeals’ reversal of the summary judgment entered in its favor in the plaintiff Bessie Carroll’s action for negligent infliction of emotional distress. We granted St. Joseph’s application to consider an important issue of first impression: whether a plaintiff may recover damages for negligent infliction of emotional distress, based on the fear of contracting the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), without presenting evidence…
