We will refer to the parties as they appeared in the trial court, where the plaintiff in error was defendant and defendant in error was plaintiff.

Plaintiff Lightner was employed by defendant as a salesman for approximately eighteen years, towards the end of which time he held the position of an accounting machine territory sales manager. The terms of his employment with the defendant were governed by a written contract which contained express provisions relating to the manner in which his compensation was determined.
