Following the death of Paul Downing, plaintiff Fort Dearborn Life Insurance Company filed an interpleader action (735 ILCS 5/2 — 409 (West 1998)) against Susan Downing, the decedent’s widow, and Janet Holcomb, the decedent’s companion at the time of his death. The action sought to resolve competing claims to the proceeds of two insurance policies decedent held with the plaintiff.
