Griffin Williams brought suit against the St. Paul’s Colored Methodist Episcopal Church and the trustees thereof (naming them), and the Chatham Beal Estate & Improvement Company. The petition sought to obtain a general judgment against the church and the trustees, and to set up and foreclose a lien which the plaintiff claimed for improvements made by him as a contractor on land on which the church was situated, and to which the Chatham Beal Estate & Improvement Company held a deed to secure a debt.
