Perhaps our law has undergone no more essential revolution in any respect, than in regard to promissory notes. From the earliest history of our jurisprudence, down to October, 1811, all promissory notes, except such as were made payable at banks and to insurance companies, whatever their form, were considered as specialties, and not negotiable or assignable according to the custom of merchants. 1 Sw.
