In October 2017, a jury found Chavez Spotted Horse guilty of three counts of Child Abuse, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1153 and SDCL § 26-10-1, as well as three counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, in violation of 18 U.S.C. §§ 1153 and 113(a)(3).
