In lawsuits that were later consolidated, three railroad employees sued their employer, respondent Soo Line Railroad Company d/b/a Canadian Pacific (Canadian Pacific), for personal injuries caused when their locomotive seats collapsed. Canadian Pacific filed a third-party complaint seeking contribution and/or indemnity from the seat manufacturers, appellants Knoedler Manufacturers Inc., and Knoedler Manufacturers Canada LTD (collectively, Knoedler).
