Jacques Tushinsky was a musician in the National Broadcasting Co. Orchestra traveling in South America on a good-will tour under the charge of H. Leopold Spitalny and the direction of the distinguished maestro Arturo Toscanini. On July 10, 1940, the orchestra arrived in Rio de Janeiro by train and stopped at the Plaza Hotel. The theatre was directly across the street from the hotel. At four o’clock in the afternoon the musicians, including Tushinsky, reported at the theatre for rehearsal.
