In March, 1816, the Supreme Lodge Knights of Honor was incorporated by an act of the legislature of Kentucky as a fraternal association with insurance features, whereby it was empowered to create a fund from which upon the death of a member, in the words of the act, “a sum not exceeding $5,000 shall be paid to his family, or as he may direct.” In the exercise of the charter powers thus acquired the order on August 15, 1881, established at New Orleans, Louisiana, a subordinate lodge, known as Excelsior Lodge No. 2526.
