POSNER, Circuit Judge.

The plaintiffs, an Illinois county and several of its officials, filed a class action suit in an Illinois state court on behalf of all the counties in the state against the mortgage services company MERSCORP Holdings, Inc., and a number of banks that do business with it. The suit alleges that MER-SCORP is violating an Illinois statute that, the counties (as we’ll call the plaintiffs) contend, requires every mortgage on real property in Illinois to be recorded.
