I. Introduction

While walking across an unpaved landscape area at the Greenfield Center Post Office, Mary 0. Furey slipped and fell on a slushy accumulation of snow and ice, and fractured her ankle. She sued under the Federal Tort Claims Act (“FTCA”), 28 U.S.C. § 2671 et. seq., claiming that the Post Office negligently failed to maintain the area or warn her about walking there.
