The petitioner was convicted in the Criminal Court of Lake County, Indiana, on his plea of guilty, of the crime of kidnaping, lie had no counsel at the trial. When he requested counsel, the prosecuting attorney told him it would be useless, lie told the court he did not know whether he was guilty or not. The court said it could not advise him how to plead, and insisted that he plead to the charge against him. The petitioner entered a plea of guilty and wás sentenced to life imprisonment in the State Prison, of which the respondent, Dowd, is Warden. The petitioner is held by the respondent on…
