In 1987, a grand jury indicted defendant, Bernard J. Condon, and Timothy Condon, his brother, for armed violence (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1987, ch. 38, par. 33A — 2 (now 720 ILCS 5/33A — 2 (West 1992))), the unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, the possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, the possession with intent to deliver cannabis, and a calculated criminal drug conspiracy (Ill.
