The husband appeals a postdivorce judgment of the Probate and Family Court providing for property division and alimony. We affirm in part and reverse in part.
Background. The parties were married in Pennsylvania in 1956, lived in Weymouth, separated in 1985, and were divorced in 1989. Because the divorce, obtained by the husband in Pennsylvania,1 was silent as to property or spousal support, a *739trial was held in 1995 based on the wife’s postdivorce complaint for property division and alimony.2
