OPINION
This opinion is the last of three opinions concerning the imposition of sanctions against the Esso Defendants1 and their former counsel.2 During the past twenty years as a United States District Judge, I cannot recall being involved with a more disturbing proceeding. The process of determining whether and if so, what type of sanctions should be imposed on a party or their counsel while passing on the merits of the underlying action places a trial judge in a difficult, unfamiliar role.
