OPINION

JANE BLAND, Justice.

A jury found Jose Luis Bazan guilty of the first-degree felony offense of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. After finding true the allegation in the enhancement paragraph — that Bazan previously had been convicted of felony robbery — the jury assessed his punishment at life imprisonment. See Tex. Penal Code Ann. § 29.03 (West 2011). Following his conviction, Bazan discharged his trial counsel and retained new counsel, who moved for a new trial, contending that trial counsel was ineffective because he failed to investigate and subpoena witnesses to testify on…
