In March 1987, the Trustees of the United Mine Workers of America Health and Retirement Funds (“the Trustees”) brought this action in district court against appellee Hallmark & Son and other coal companies, alleging that the companies had failed to report and pay pension fund contributions due under national industry wage agreements of 1978, 1981, and 1984.
