Section 550(a) of the Bankruptcy Code empowers the trustee of a bankruptcy estate to recover property transferred by the debtor from “the initial transferee of such transfer or the entity for whose benefit such transfer was made” or “any immedi*28ate or mediate transferee of such initial transferee,” but only “to the extent that a transfer is avoided” under one of the Bankruptcy Code’s avoidance provisions. 11 U.S.C. § 550(a) (emphasis added).
