In 1898, the “Vanderbilt families owned controlling inter•ests in the stock of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railroad and of the Miehi.gan Central Railroad. They also owned the controlling interest in the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad. At that date they caused the New York Central & Hudson River to purchase this control of stock of each of the other railroads.
